The overall idea would be to give some impression of there being underlying facial bones, which puddings lack because they're worthless lumps of clay. Lower the cheek fullness until they seem reasonable for somebody with their skull shape and build. Puddings are far too rounded and undefined, especially male ones. Pudding heads are generally much too wide- they appear to have several inches between the outer corners of the eyes and the sides of the head, while most actual human beings don't have much more than an inch and a half there. This is particularly important for toddlers and children, who have awful default eyebrows that I never use. Lower them a great deal, and find lower-positioned CC eyebrows until you have something that doesn't look permanently surprised. Pudding eyebrows are way, way, WAY too high.
Generally, the distance between human eyes is equal to the width of one eye. This guide (in comment #12) basically describes the first things I do in CAS: The vanilla skin definitely does not help, but it can be pretty easy to de-puddify sims. Those two blogs have totally different styles of sims from more Maxis-Match blogs, like pixelbots or brightlysimming, who use mostly Maxis content/edits of Maxis content, like Maxis-Match Sims 4 players do. Alpha clothing looks very different from Maxis clothing.
Another big difference is clothing, like this sim by satellite-sims, or this sim by pandelabs. Some alpha CC users on Tumblr use photorealistic skin, like this sim by cualquiere. So alpha CC can still match the environment of the game, but there's quite a difference between how the sims of a Maxis-Match CC user and an alpha CC user look. In my opinion, the sims aren't very realistic but the environment is. The line between Maxis-Match and alpha CC is definitely more blurred in Sims 3, but as you can see from the picture, Rita's eyes are similar to the cartoony look of Sims 4 (you can see this more clearly with littledica's conversion of Sims 3 eyes to Sims 4), and the skin is even smoother (compare that to the realistic textured skin in Sims Medieval).
